There is a woman on Reddit who is upset about something happening with her fiancé and their money.
The 33-year-old woman said that her 37-year-old fiancé constantly lied to her about how much money she had, which made him demand that she pay for their meals with friends.
She finally had enough one day and made a shocking choice that would affect her for a long time. Read on to find out what it was…
During their relationship and engagement, the woman kept her earnings separate from her partner’s because she respected his wish not to have a joint account. Okay then. However, the woman’s finances changed when she got a big raise and found out she was now making 30% more than her fiancé.
The huge difference in their incomes turned into a fight in the end, with the woman’s fiancé constantly pressuring her to pay for meals with friends. He gave a direct reason: “The 30%, that’s why.” The woman felt like he was using her pay raise against her and making it seem like she didn’t earn it because he kept asking her to do things.
Although her fiancé was being manipulative, the woman did what he asked because she didn’t want to get into a fight. And she finally lost it when he told her again in a whisper that she would be paying for a dinner with friends.
The woman did something brave when she paid for her food, excused herself to use the bathroom, quietly left the restaurant, and drove home by herself. When her fiancé called to demand an answer, she told him how angry she was that she had been tricked into paying for other people’s meals.
The confrontation escalated at home, with her fiancé resorting to calling her “selfish, irrational, cheapskate, and childish.” He also claimed his friends were disappointed in her, and questioned whether she was the right person for him to marry.
Seeking support online, the woman found Reddit users overwhelmingly siding with her. They highlighted the manipulative behavior of her fiancé, questioning why she would marry someone insistent on separate finances. Some suggested that his reaction might stem from misogyny and insecurity about the woman earning more.
“Drop him, unless this is the future you want. Someone who resents you for earning a promotion and feels entitled to the money YOU work for is not someone you should be marrying. He doesn’t love you…he loves the fact that you’re too polite to tell him ‘no,’” someone wrote.
The general consensus was pretty clear: the woman deserved better than the manipulation and verbal abuse she had endured, with many hoping she would make the wise choice to end the relationship and prioritize her well-being.
